長居を一度１９９９年８月に離れて１４年。１４という数字の年数自体はそんなに長いと思わないが、時間で表現すれば長い！

計算するのも億劫だが、その数字の桁は見たいくないものだ。14という数字の方がマシで希望を感じる。

I had left Nagai back in August, 1999. Just 14 years ago. The number "14" to express the year passed doesn't seem to be long, but would be so if I said how many hours had passed. 

I just feel tiresome to figure it out in number, and don't want to look at those big numbers, but "14" is much nicer to see hopes.
